Word Of the Head Department of Geophysics
The Department of Geophysics was first established as a division of the Department of Geology in the seventies and in 1989 the Department of Geology was merged at the Faculty of Science and the Department of Geophysical Engineering at the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering as two divisions after the establishment of the Department of Earth Sciences, which was recently divided into the departments of Geophysics and Biology in line with the modernization and development of the Department of Earth Sciences.
The Department of Geophysics aims to prepare and qualify the geophysicist specialized in the field of exploration and exploration of natural resources such as oil and gas, mineral ores, water, geological studies, mapping, environment, archeology, engineering and geotechnical studies, in line with the department's educational objectives, the study program for the undergraduate and postgraduate levels has been developed to meet these goals and keep pace with development plans and community problems.
The study program includes specialized, supportive and general courses, as the specialized sciences are concentrated in the final years and include seismic, magnetic, gravitational, geoelectrical, electromagnetic, radiological exploration, seismology and well recordings.
Supporting sciences are the various geological courses that support specialized courses, while the general courses include mathematics, physics and computer science, and the study program also includes other courses in geophysics as modern methods such as processing and interpretation of geophysical data and analysis of geophysical signals. The department also provides practical training in field sites under the supervision of specialized professors during which students practice the use of various devices. Solve scientific and applied dilemmas after graduation.
In the last two semesters, the student presents an integrated graduation project in one of the branches of applied geophysics, and the project aims to solve models related to various geophysical studies.
The department is linked to cooperation with the exploration departments of companies, national bodies and research centers such as oil companies, the Industrial Research Center, the General Authority for Water and the Libyan Petroleum Institute in the fields of training, student graduation projects, scientific consultations and cooperation in the field of teaching.
Vision
Preparing highly qualified graduates in the fields of multiple applied geophysics and contributing to solving practical and scientific issues that serve the community, and adopting scientific research and innovation in the field of geophysics.
Mission
The department aims to educate and certify geophysicists who possess expertise in the area of prospecting and exploration of natural resources. These geophysicists will actively engage in geotechnical and environmental research, while also furnishing essential geophysical data for practical studies and technical consultations. It also mainly seeks to provide specialized cadres in the field of earth sciences (geophysics) who have the ability to keep pace with the requirements of the labor market and the ability to compete locally and regionally.
Objectives
The Department strives to develop highly competent graduates in the field of geophysicsenabling students to receive theoretical and practical training, utilize the latest technologies in their fieldso that the graduate will:
- contribute to future developments.
- Knowledgeable about social issues.
- The encounter between public and private sector labor markets.
